VERS 50301 68 2006 MODE SEQ NAME Melles Griot Ball Lens 06 LMS 005 NOTE 0 This lens is a glass ball that is 5 mm in diameter. Surface 1 is a 'dummy' - it has the same refractive index each side. The rays in the layout can start there, leading to a clear diagram that shows NOTE 0 where the rays come from. Both the entrance surface on the left hand side of the ball and the exit surface on the right appear as complete hemispheres and there is a flat dummy surface in the centre NOTE 0 at surface 3. We entered the full size of these three surfaces in the Semi-Diameter column, so the whole ball is drawn. In this example, the distance from surface 4 to the focus serves to focus the NOTE 0 ray-trace so that the peak-to-valley transverse ray aberration, the geometrical-optics spot diameter, is roughly minimised. The reason for showing this position for the focus is that the lens is not NOTE 0 diffraction-limited at 2 mm entrance pupil diameter. So, for this exercise, I focused the lens by minimising the spread of the rays, rather than choosing some focusing criterion relating to the wave NOTE 0 front and its diffraction.
