VERS 50504 79 2006 MODE SEQ NAME Test fibre coupling with Ball Lens NOTE 0 The lens is the same as in Ex00-Ball_Lens.zmx, but now with a Gaussian Beam input - see the Gen/Aperture window. The analysis here includes the Fiber Coupling feature, which tests a property of the i NOTE 0 mage. It shows how much power can be transmitted from the left-hand side across a space in the parallel beam, and be received by a fibre at the image position on the right, when it is focused by this NOTE 0 particular ball lens. Only 5.2 % of the transmitted power is captured by the fibre. This is mainly because the ball lens provides a numerical aperture of 0.344 in the image space, but the fibre is NOTE 0 defined as having a numerical aperture of 0.1. Even if the output beam in the image space was a pure Gaussian Beam, there would be a large mismatch with the fibre. The coupling would be larger if NOTE 0 the input beam was diverging from another fibre, rather than being collimated, as the numerical apertures would match better.
