The Department of Physics is seeking to strengthen our programme in Accelerator Physics with the appointment of an Associate Professor or Professor in Particle Accelerator Physics with effect from 1 September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will also be offered a Tutorial Fellowship at Worcester College, under arrangements described in the job description. The combined University and College salary will be in the range £48,114 to £64,605 per annum plus substantial additional benefits including a College housing allowance of £9,660 p.a., a research and tutorial allowance of £1,752 p.a. and an entertainment allowance of £450 p.a. An allowance of £2,804 p.a. would be payable upon award of Full Professor title. Full Professors also have access to further merit-based pay awards.

The Associate Professor will join a vibrant community of particle accelerator physicists at the John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science (JAI). The JAI is a centre of excellence for accelerator science and technology and is engaged in research on frontier electron and hadron accelerators for particle physics and photon and neutron sciences, as well as accelerator-based particle-beam applications for medicine and industry. The purpose of this appointment is to recruit a particle accelerator physicist who would take a leading role in the advancement of high-energy, high-intensity hadron accelerators, with an emphasis on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its upgrade (HL-LHC).

The successful candidate will hold a doctorate in particle accelerator physics or a related subject, and will have a proven record of high-quality creative research in hadron accelerators at an international level. They will be an excellent teacher at the undergraduate and graduate level. They will be expected to develop a world-leading research programme addressing fundamental challenges in hadron accelerators, to teach at the undergraduate and graduate level, and to participate in the administration and governance of Worcester College and the Physics Department.
